Make it a Crappie Day

“Mistah Wysoon, what are you doing next week, as in Wednesday and/or Thursday?” questioned Luke Clayton with whom I have been doing “Campfire Talk,” a weekly radio show segment, for now over ten years for his Luke Clayton Outdoors, sponsored by DSC. “Got a place for us to do some social distancing and we’ll do our best to make it a really crappie day!”

“You got my attention!  Tell me more!”

“I think you and I need to get together with Jeff Rice on his Buck and Bass Ranch. There’s plenty of room for us to spatially separate, and Jeff has a special place where we can go fish for crappie.  We should be able to catch enough for a really good fish fry and take home some fillets as well.  No need to even bring a fishing rod, I’ve got an extra one for you to use.  Whatdathink?”

“Send me directions.  I know I’ve been there before, but it’s been a while.”

A few minutes later I got a text from Luke giving me the quickest way to get there.

On the appointed day I arrived just as Luke was serving up a huge plate of wild pork ribs, along with all the “fixins.”  After eating far more than I should have and catching up with both Jeff and Luke on the latest as far as hunting and fishing were concerned, we headed to Jeff’s special crappie hole. “Little white grubs seem to work best, what I used when I was here a week ago,” instructed Jeff.

On my first cast I hooked into a white crappie, it fought aggressively.  To both my left and right I heard Luke and Jeff proclaim, “Fish on!”  The “white perch” as I grew up calling crappie put up an aggressive fight.  But I soon landed it and put it on our stringer.  Jeff and Luke did the same.

I did not catch on my second cast, but did so on my third, fourth and fifth casts. I strung two of those. Luke and Jeff were catching regularly and, in no time at all, we had an admirable stringer of white crappie.  “Think we got enough for supper. Let’s head back to the ranch. We should get back in time to hunt hogs.” Said Jeff.  “Larry, remember that sounder of hogs you saw last time you were here with Rick Lambert, and that big grayish-brown boar you saw?”  I nodded an affirmative. “He’s back, saw him last week.  You did bring one of your Ruger No. 1s, didn’t you?”

“Yes Sir, brought a .405 Win topped with a Trijicon scope and a full box of Hornady ammo.  Anxious to turn them loose on a big boar…..”
